A little something extra is now arriving on the iPads of Esquire subscribers every week.

The monthly men's lifestyle magazine launched a weekly, ad-supported edition dubbed Esquire Weekly, which will be automatically delivered to tablet subscribers at no additional charge. The issue will arrive every Thursday, except the Thursdays when the monthly magazine is released. Non-subscribers can pick up a copy for $0.99 per issue.

Each installment promises to contain seven pieces of original writing spanning culture, politics, humor and food, alongside some repurposed content from Esquire.com. Most of that repurposed content will be fresh for tablet subscribers, since the overlap between tablet subscribers and Esquire.com readers is "nominal," Joe Keohane, senior editor of Esquire Digital, told Mashable. (David Granger, editor-in-chief of Esquire, has previously said the overlap is less than 10%.) Read more...

WordPress CEO Matt Mullenweg claims the platform saw an unusually high number of imported posts from Tumblr Sunday night, perhaps an early indication that some are looking to flee in light of the pending Yahoo acquisition

Mullenweg (pictured) wrote on his blog that WordPress received 72,000 imports during one hour on Sunday, versus the usual 400 to 600 posts. He added that WordPress is friendly with Tumblr, and the two use each other's services

"News like this, whether from a friend or a competitor, is always bittersweet: I’m curious to see what the creative folks behind Tumblr do with their new resources, both personal and corporate, but I’m more interested to know what they would have done over the next 5-10 years as an independent company," he wrote. Advice for Clueless Brands on Social Media

Business-tired

Dear Bob & Doug:

We are husband-and-wife proprietors of an Arizona eatery I won’t name, but which rhymes with “Framy's Fraking Frompany Frakery Froutique & Fristro.” Craziest thing: We were having some trouble with staff who seemed to think that “tips” belonged to “them,” instead of my husband and me. We were also getting some bad Yelp reviews (fakes obviously written by competitors), but then we were invited to be featured on a reality TV show starring some Brit twit whose name rhymes with Frordan Framsey. Well, surprise, surprise. The producers managed to gin up some “conflict” by assaulting us with vicious, groundless hostile observations and suggestions, such as not screaming profanity and homophobic epithets at customers waiting an hour for a pizza.

Let me ask you this: How are we supposed to bake a pizza when our kitchen is filled with disloyal incompetents dead-set on destroying our business?

Space Tourism Could Help Save Planet Earth

Opening spaceflight up to the masses could help spark a global conservation ethic that stems the tide of environmental destruction on Earth, NASA's science chief says.

Seeing our fragile Earth hanging alone in the blackness of space tends to be a life-altering, or at least perspective-changing, experience. If more people around the world are treated to that unforgettable sight, humanity might handle the planet with a bit more care, said John Grunsfeld, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate.

"Ultimately, my vision is that lots of people get to go to space," Grunsfeld said here Saturday (May 18) at Maker Faire Bay Area, a two-day celebration of DIY science, technology and engineering. "If we get more people, we'll have folks who can articulate a view of the Earth that leads to more people who want to keep the Earth a nice place to live." Read more...

Beyond Money: What Startups Need From Investors

Investor-expectations

As creatives, we might imagine investors to be souless suits behind Excel spreadsheets who do little more than sign checks — but that's far from true. Increasingly, VCs are people who used to be entrepreneurs (Kevin Rose, Mark Suster, Josh Kopelman). Many startup founders actually prefer to take money from someone who has been in the trenches. You might spend most of your time competing for funding — trying to stand out from the multitude of startups hoping to raise a round — but don't forget that for VCs, they must compete for the best startups as well. One way they do that is through value-add, or offering additional services to their portfolio companies. Read more...

A massive storm generated several tornadoes on Sunday in the Midwest, hitting Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. The tornado in Kansas got so bad that news station staff at the NBC affiliate TV station in Wichita, Kan. had to leave in the middle of a live broadcast to take cover.

In the dramatic video, the channel's meteorologist JD Rudd is talking about the extreme weather in front of a radar image of the storm when, after a few seconds, producers tells him it's time to leave

"You know JD, in 20 years I never said this, but I think it's our time to go," he says. "It is time for all of us to get to shelter." Read more...

The Dreamliner takes to the skies with a new battery system encased in steel and with greater separation between individual cells. Those steps, Boeing believes, should put an end to the battery fire issues that caused the Federal Aviation Administration to ground the 787 fleet in January. The FAA approved Boeing's solution to the 787's battery issues last month following extensive test flights. Read more...

Atlantic Media Nabs ‘Foreign Policy’ Writer to Edit Defense Site

The Atlantic Media Company has hired an editor to run Defense One, a digital-only publication concentrating on defense and national security launching this summer.

Kevin Baron, a national security reporter for Foreign Policy magazine, has been brought on as editor-in-chief executive editor, effective June 3. The position is a homecoming of sorts for Baron, who prior to Foreign Policy covered the "business of war" for another Atlantic Media publication, National Journal.

Baron has just a few weeks to contract staff writers and contributors and to launch the title. It will start with just a handful of writers and editors, borrowing stories from other Atlantic Media publications and drawing on the company's existing technical and production resources, Baron said in a phone interview with Mashable on Friday. A spokesperson for Atlantic Media said the size of the Defense One team will eventually match or surpass those of other core Atlantic brands such as Quartz or Government Executive, which each have between 15 and 20 employees working on content and production.
